Imagine the situation that you must get up at 6 am. So, the alarm clock has rung, and now it is time to actually get up. Will you do it easily? Or will you snooze for another five minutes?
You may say that it depends on the situation.
But I say that it depends on the type of energy that motivates you. So, what is your type?
3 types of energy
The first type – “must” energy.
So, you don’t want to get up, but you must. You press snooze for another five minutes, then another more. Until it is impossible not to be late, then you unwillingly get up and go to the shower. Of course, you are late to your boring job/school/university.
You do things because someone tells you must. No matter it violates your inner harmony, but you still do it. You can not do it, but because of fear to break some rules, to be punished or hated you do. “Must” energy is the energy of fear. Dirty and weak.
The second type – “action” energy.
So, you get up at 5 am, go to the shower, and then full of energy ask loudly “what to do next?”. You just cannot sit still, you can do nothing but move. Then you come to your job first and do more tasks than any other in your office.
You do things because you cannot be without occupation. Everything fits you – “just give me this task”, you say.
Be careful – this type of energy is blind! So many hyperactive children were employed to spread harmful ideas as Hitlerjugend in Nazi Germany, as Komsomol in the Soviet Union, they were also involved in Chinese cultural revolution. Hyperactive children join street gangs just for the realization of their action energy, and often all you need is to give them a good direction for this realization.
The third type – “wish” energy.
So, you wake up at 4 am and rush to your office/school/university. Why? Because you wish that project to be done. It is the fulfillment of your dream!
This energy is the most powerful one. It overcomes fear, it lets you do more action, it gives you the direction, allows you to forget temporal suffering, makes you learn what you didn’t know before.
But be careful, if you wish for more money, are you sure it is not of fear?
If you wish to care for homeless children, are you sure it is not just for being occupied by some action?
“Must” energy is the weakest, “wish” energy is the strongest. The more you rely on “wish” energy, the stronger you will be.
If you realize, that you don’t have time to cultivate your wishes because you must do this or that – you have found the root of your problems.
How can your wishes come true, if you do not wish anything?
Even more energy?
Maybe there is a stronger type of energy, “love” energy. It has stronger direction than the wish, it allows you to endure more difficulties because you forget yourself and concentrate on others.
Maybe there is the fifth type of energy I would call “universal” energy. When you act in perfect harmony and maintain perfect balance, so anything and anyone cannot stand in your way. You are driven by nor love nor selfishness like water flows down the waterfall with noise and bursts of energy, but actually, it just rests on the laws of physics.
Maybe, but let’s concentrate on what we are sure about right now.
So, how to have more energy?
This theory of types is good because it allows having some methodical approach how to increase energy and overcome fears.
First of all, you must know that energy is needed for some kind of task to do. Why do you need that energy? To be busier?
First should be the task. Maybe the energy you have right now is just enough?
Everyone uses all types of energies all the time. So there are no “must”, “action” or “wish” personalities. There is a mix of them, but one might be dominating. Maybe you do not need any other type of energy, just using that one wisely is enough.
If your task is really too big for the amount of energy you have, here are some ways how to increase it.
1. Reframe “must”
Maybe a “must” you have could be reframed to a “wish”?
“I must pass this exam” or “I wish to graduate university, so I wish to pass this exam”. Knowing the reason behind your actions could help.
“I must go to the job today” and “I wish to influence positively the lives of people around, so I wish to go to the job today and influence positively the lives of people around”. A different way of thinking about some tasks could also help.
2. Employ fear
Fear is powerful, so you can employ it by changing the object of your fear.
First, you can fear to stay in the same place. If you fear to take some action, better fear not to take it and lose what you could get. Will you regret after 5 years not taking that action? Regret? Then it is time for action!
Also, a more simple approach – you can have a little punishment to yourself if you fail to do something. Then you will fear the punishment. Punishment could be donating money to your hated political party or denying to eat sweets for one week.
For one week I did not allow for myself to eat dinner if I ate a not healthy snack that day. That worked unbelievably well – in one week I stopped snacking.
3. Develop habit of action
“Action” energy is a habit of being constantly in a move. So if you want to increase this type of energy the only thing you need is a habit.
How to get this habit? Repeat doing the same again and again and the habit will come. But how to move constantly if you have this lack of energy? Seems like a conundrum…
The answer is simple – use other types of energy and put yourself in a frame. Like the legendary way of making yourself exercise regularly – buying a gym membership – and then you must go because you fear to waste money.
Make commitments and you will move because of fear. Buy the membership, pay for courses, classes in advance and you will move because you paid for this. Join active groups of people and you will move because you will wish to be friends with them.
After some time you will use the legendary way of saving money – you will exercise regularly at home and will save on gym membership. Just you will have the habit then and this “must” will not be needed anymore.
I speak from experience – action is a habit. I prefer to sit daydreaming, but I managed to develop that habit and now I spend more time making dreams come true.
4. Increase wish
If the wish is the strongest type of energy it may be a good idea to boost wish.
How? Wish stronger! How? The old as the world advice sounds like this “visualize your dream!”. Each morning after wake up and each evening before sleeping visualize your wish in full detail. See the colors, hear the sounds, feel the touch, taste, and scent. Sink yourself in your wish. Be it a successful project in your job, finished master thesis or a family weekend. How does it feel to be there? Sometimes this is called daydreaming. Allow yourself a session.
There is another tiny technique just the opposite of the one mentioned before. Instead of punishing yourself and increasing fear, have small presents for yourself after small achievements. A bar of chocolate, some ice cream or a can of beer after running a mile, writing a page or doing any other task.
5. Use energy of other people
This one is quite difficult to use for an introvert, but it works really well.
Other people have lots of energy of different kinds. So, you can be close to them and use their energy. How?
Do things together. Probably they will show you how to do some tasks easily or even do it for you. Doing things together generates lots of “action” energy. Just moving together is fun! Lazy to study? Study with someone. Lazy to go to the gym? Go together with someone. At least, it is not about chatting – it is about doing things together.
Ask for help. Most of the people are happy to be distracted from their daily tasks and to show their kindness. Let them do that by asking for help. Or if you have the problem asking, at least by showing somehow that you need help.
Ask how it feels like to be there. They will tell you their stories and you will know the feeling not only from your imagination but also from real life experience. This can increase your “wish” energy significantly.
Have a hero to follow. Have an ultimate idol. Like a well-known illusionist Hary Houdini all his life tried to imitate French master Houdin, he even changed his name to resemble his idol. And who is more famous now?
When you have an idol – be it the one who have great achievements in your field, fictional character, your imaginary super-self or just a close friend – you can always ask yourself: “how would my hero behave in this situation?” And then whoa – you have the energy of your hero!
Envy the successful. This is also a long-term driving force. But use it correctly – do not try to deteriorate the situation of successful, just improve yours to reach them. Let’s work towards creative energy, not destructive.
Join communities. It is a good idea for some specific tasks to join specific communities. Want to travel but have a fear to go abroad? Join travelers club. Want to write a blog but don’t know how? Find a community of bloggers. They will provide you with some “musts”, they will have a regular “action” and will give you a “wish”. And they will not just talk about things – you will get the opportunity to do things together.
All that I shared here is my introvert philosophy of how to make myself do some action. For me it works, I guess it might work for you too.
Energy can be gained and it is not that difficult. The main question is why you need that energy? What will you do with it? After answering this question, you will either realize you don’t need additional energy or you will just gain it from inside.
